Ravenglass Estuary in bloom

Ravenglass, a former Roman settlement, is the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park. Ravenglass is situated at a river estuary where three rivers, the River Esk, the River Irt, and the River Mite reach the sea. On the seaward side of the estuary are sand dunes with an opening for the rivers to reach the sea. Whent Cottage is situated in the main street near the river estuary.

The Ravenglass area is on the quieter western part of the Lake District away from the bustle of the centre. Ravenglass is free from through road traffic, which enhances its attraction as a secluded haven to escape the bustle of urban life. Visitors to Whent Cottage will enjoy the quiet solitude that this holiday cottage in Cumbria offers.

There is a railway station at Ravenglass village on the line between Barrow in Furness and Carlisle, which makes Ravenglass an attractive destination for rail travel. In addition, there is the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway, a leading tourist attraction in the Lake District, which runs from Ravenglass to Boot in Eskdale, a distance of 7 miles, and this railway opens up the possibility of exploring the valley of Eskdale by train. Whent Cottage is only a few minutes walk from the stations in the village.

Ravenglass is well situated for visiting the very fine valleys in the western part of the Lake District, to include Eskdale, Wasdale, the Duddon valley, Ennerdale, Loweswater and Buttermere. England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, is a little over 10 miles away, plus many other fine fells within easy access from Ravenglass. Whent Cottage offers many and varied possibilities for mountain walkers and climbers.

At Ravenglass, there are the ruins of a Roman bath house, dating back to the time when Ravenglass was a Roman settlement. The Roman bath house is a short walk from Whent Cottage. There are also the remains of a Roman fort located part of the way up Hardknott Pass, in Eskdale, about 9 miles away.

About a mile from Ravenglass is the historic Muncaster Castle, which is open to visitors. Muncaster Castle has a hawk and owl centre and beautiful landscaped gardens. Muncaster Castle lies on Muncaster Fell, which offers good walking from Ravenglass and boasts fine views to the coast and inland to the higher fells of Lakeland. Muncaster Castle can be reached by foot or a short drive from Whent Cottage.

Visitors to Ravenglass can enjoy the coast as well. Drigg beach nearby is a beautiful, long sandy beach with a nature reserve. Visitors to Whent Cottage can often enjoy spectacular sunsets as the sun sets over the sand dunes in the river estuary in the evening.
